Midori Yamanaka

Midori Yamanaka is a social practice artist, creative director, and international educator working between Japan and the United States, and the Founder and Co-Director of Mirai Lab.
With a background in visual communication, she works across branding, education, and community-engaged projects, collaborating with global companies, public institutions, nonprofits, and local communities. Centered on civic engagement and cross-cultural dialogue, her practice focuses on designing frameworks that transform difference into shared learning and connection.
As a parent of a child with unique needs, Midori brings lived experience to her work, shaping her understanding of diversity, accessibility, and inclusive education. Her perspective is informed by her international study experience and over two decades of professional work across organizations in both Japan and the United States.
She has held leadership roles in grassroots exchange initiatives, including serving on the executive committee for homestay programs through Nanka Dosanko Kai, supporting Hokkaido high school students in Los Angeles. She also served as Program Manager at Oya No Kai, a Portland, Oregon–based nonprofit, coordinating Japan study and cultural immersion programs for American K–12 students with public schools and community partners.
In her forties, she returned to graduate school and earned an MFA in Art and Social Practice in 2025. She currently serves as a Fellow at the Center for Public Service at Portland State University.

ビジュアル・コミュニケーションを基盤に、ブランディング、教育、地域連携プロジェクトなど多領域で活動し、グローバル企業から公共機関、NPO、地域コミュニティまで、幅広いステークホルダーと協働してきた。シビック・エンゲージメントや異文化対話を軸に、「違い」を学びとつながりへと転換する場や仕組みのデザインを実践している。
特性のある子どもを育てる当事者としての経験から、多様性、アクセシビリティ、インクルーシブな学びの重要性を深く理解し、それを教育・社会実践に反映。また、自身の留学経験に加え、日本とアメリカ双方の組織で20年以上にわたり活動してきた実務経験を持つ。
在ロサンゼルス北海道人会・南加道産子会では、北海道の高校生を対象としたホームステイプログラムの実行委員として長年運営に携わってきた。さらに、アメリカ・オレゴン州ポートランド市を拠点とする非営利団体 Oya No Kai ではProgram Managerとして、公立学校や地域団体と連携しながら、アメリカの小学生・中学生・高校生を対象とした日本研修および文化交流プログラムをコーディネート。
40代で大学院に進学し、ソーシャル・プラクティスを理論と実践の両面から学び、2025年にMFA（Art and Social Practice）を取得。現在は、ポートランド州立大学 Center for Public Service フェローとしても活動。

Midori Yamanaka is a social practice artist and international educator working between Japan and the United States.
She grew up in a small rural town in Hokkaido where drift ice arrives each winter, in a family that has run a local newspaper since her grandparents’ generation.
During Japan’s employment ice age, she moved to the United States in her twenties to build practical skills. Although English was never her strength, she gradually learned the language and how to navigate life through determination and courage.
She studied visual communication at university and began her career as a designer. With a focus on communication and connection, she has worked on a wide range of brand communication projects, from global companies to individuals and local communities.
Through raising a child with unique needs,
she came to deeply understand the importance and value of diversity and inclusive learning.

After studying at Santa Monica College, she entered the media field following an internship at the Atlanta Olympic Games.
For nearly 30 years, she has worked as an overseas correspondent based in Los Angeles,
sharing cultural, entertainment, and sports-related stories with audiences in Japan.
She has also been deeply involved in the Southern California Dosanko Association (Nanka Dosankokai), an organization connecting Hokkaido and Los Angeles. From 2013, she served as president for 12 years and played a central role from the early stages of the Hokkaido high school homestay program in Los Angeles.
In 2025, she returned to Sapporo from Los Angeles and began her work as Co-Director of Mirai Lab, supporting cultural and educational initiatives that connect Hokkaido with the wider world.
映画、芸能、スポーツ、文化、国際交流を専門とするリサーチャー／ライターであり、みらいラボの共同代表。
札幌生まれ・札幌育ち。学生時代を稚内で過ごし、ロシアとの交流活動に参加した経験が、異文化交流への関心の原点となった。
サンタモニカ大学への留学後、アトランタオリンピックでのインターンをきっかけにメディアの世界へ。以後、約30年にわたり海外通信員としてロサンゼルスを拠点に活動し、映画、芸能、スポーツをはじめとする文化情報を日本に発信してきた。
また、北海道とロサンゼルスをつなぐ、在ロサンゼルス北海道人会（南加道産子会）の活動に長年携わり、2013年から12年間にわたり会長を務める。道産子高校生ロサンゼルス・ホームステイプログラムでは、立ち上げ当初から中心的な役割を担ってきた。
2025年にロサンゼルスから札幌へ拠点を移し、みらいラボの共同代表として活動を開始。北海道と世界をつなぐ文化・教育の取り組みに携わっている。
